The Goal.

Hi.

My name is Pat St-Pierre-Plamondon. I am a reader.

Growing up in a poor ghetto of Montréal was never easy. Food and clothes were scarce; there was no place for luxury. We had a roof, four walls and a small television and that was pretty much it. Books were not deemed necessary, so they were never really sought.

I did not care about reading until the sixth grade. We were required to read a few novels at school. Thanks to the many libraries around Montréal, I was able to grab my first real book. Being that I grew up in a francophone school, it was "Le Raisin Devient Banane" by Raymond Plante.

I do not even remember what it was about. What I do remember is the joy of discovering a secret sanctum, away from our financial and familial problems. I have read avidly since that day.

I ask teenagers about their reading habits and I normally get one of these five answers:

1) I read what the school is asking me to read
2) I read every week
3) Reading is stupid
4) I don't have time to read
5) Books are too expensive

Some of the answers really sadden me. This blog has for goal to prove that reading is far from stupid and that time can be made, everyday, to read. However, the point I will stress the most is that books are far from expensive; knowledge can come at a very cheap price.

I dare even state that knowledge can be obtained for less than a dollar a piece.

This is my wager.

I will obtain, though online book stores, such as Amazon, books for under one dollar. I will read and rate each book on this blog. Once I obtain 250 books, I will conclude the experiment and figure if knowledge can indeed come cheap or if I have been wasting time, effort and money on this.

I will post the rules, beginning date and other information shortly.

Thank you for reading and share the info!
